<image:caption>NEW Artist Elise Jenny Wehrmann Moore (1878-1951) Year 1920s Medium Oil on board 20"x 24" (board size) Price Upon request Elise Jenny Wehrmann Moore (1878-1951) was the wife of famed New Orleans photographer Charles Bennette Moore, and they were wed in the fall of 1901. C. Bennette Moore (as he was known professionally) started to photograph scenic views of Old New Orleans for the tourists and locals who visited the French Quarter in the 1920s and 1930s. Most of his photographs were hand colored by his wife Elise and their four daughters. C. Bennette Moore died suddenly in 1939, but his wife, a proficient and well-regarded artist in her own right, with her daughters were able to continue his photography business with much success. Elise W. Moore was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to father, Valentine Charles Wehrmann and mother, Charlotte Marie Marchand. She spent her entire life in New Orleans. She is known for regionalist paintings, particularly of Old New Orleans courtyards and rural scenes. Her most active period was in the 1920s through the 1940s. It is assumed her artistic training came mostly from association with the numerous local artists active in New Orleans throughout the mid-to-late 19th century and into the early 20th century.</image:caption>

While there, he studied under noted American impressionist Daniel Garber. He won two Cresson Traveling scholarships through the school and by 1935 he had been hired as an instructor. With Garber's encouragement in the 1920s he began painting the hilly working-class neighborhoods of Manayunk, an older industrial suburb of Philadelphia whose colorful stone and stone-stucco houses dotted the hillsides along the Schuylkill River and these became his signature pieces in his early career. He also found work painting WPA murals in two different North Carolina towns and also found time during the summer of 1934 to teach at UNC. His final appointment was at East Carolina University where he became the first artist in residence at the school from 1961 to 1975 when he retired. He remained in Greenville, North Carolina with his artist wife Sarah Blakeslee until his death in 1989.</image:caption>

He was a member of the Rockport Art Association, Connecticut Watercolor Society (past director), New Haven Paint and Clay Club (former president), the Copley Society, and Southern Vermont Artists. This charming watercolor of the Chowan County Courthouse was painted in 1942 while Voight served at the Marine Corps Air Base in Edenton, North Carolina. I spoke with the artist before his death and he confirmed he painted several local landmarks in the area the year he spent at the Base. The piece is signed just beneath the mat and a picture is available upon request. The painting came with the current frame which is nondescript and has a few touched up indentations. <image:caption>Artist Eliot Candee Clark (1883-1980) Year 1940s Medium Gouache/Watercolor on paper 22"x30" (paper size) Price Upon request Eliot Candee Clark, born in 1883 in New York, was a precocious artist - he exhibited two pieces at the New York Water Color Club when he was only nine years old; at age 13 exhibited with the National Academy and the New York Water Color Club; by 1912 he had won national painting awards; and by 1916 was writing books on American artists as well as the history of the National Academy. He was the son of tonalist painter Walter Clark (1848-1917). He was widely traveled in Europe and beyond, and associated with major artists of his day. He moved to Albemarle, Virginia in 1932, and was one of the few Impressionist artists of the Southern states. Clark was a teacher including at the National Art Club from 1943, the Art Students League, and New York City College. His landscapes evoked a "spiritualized rendition of nature". Clark developed an early interest in oriental philosophy that ended up having a major effect on his artistic development. These interests lead him to travel even to India and Tibet. He continued to paint almost to the end of his life, enjoying the solitude and peace of the surrounding environment where he could relate to canvas the subtleties of nature as only he could. He was elected an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1917 and full academician in 1944. Due to the size of the watercolor, it is framed without a mat but has conservation spacers separating it from the glass and frame.</image:caption>

She spent the rest of her childhood in Kernersville, eventually graduating from Kernersville High School. After she graduated, she moved to Washington DC, where she worked at the Pentagon. Myers. He entered the University of Florida in 1938, and in 1942 was called into the U.S. Army artillery one year short of his degree. Whitehead returned to Gainesville and earned Bachelors and Master Degrees in Fine Art. His home was a twelve acre farm eight miles Northeast of Ft. Myers where his familiarity with rural country life was transferred into paint using lithography. Whitehead traveled the country selling his prints out of a trunk. He became one of the most outstanding stone lithographers, working in color, in the United States. This rare original watercolor by Whitehead was painted on the reverse of his folio-sized color lithograph titled WOOD IBIS presumably while he was on a marketing trip through the Carolinas. He obviously stopped in Charleston, South Carolina and being fascinated as he was with buildings, found the historic Miles Brewton House a perfect subject for a watercolor painting. The work has been professionally cleaned with a few edge repairs to the paper but all outside of the image area. A truly rare work by one of the south’s most revered lithographers.</image:caption>

She died on 27 January 1957, in Rantowles, Charleston. She is buried on Johns Island. Depicting Magnolia Gardens, one of Charleston’s venerable tourist spots, her adept handling of the watercolor medium is clearly evident in this work. The son of a butcher, he encountered people from all over the country who flocked to the capital during the tumultuous decade that followed. In elementary school, he showed an aptitude for oil painting, and after the divorce of his parents in 1944 he moved with his mother to Baltimore, Maryland, where he lived the rest of his life. He was a 1954 graduate of Baltimore City College and attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, studying under Jacques Maroger and his apprentice, Ann Schuler. He earned a Fine Arts degree and served with the Maryland National Guard for two years, before returning to art full time. He met and married Elizabeth O’Connor in 1978; they had two daughters who attended Baltimore School for the Arts and became artists as well. As a mentor to countless Baltimore artists who saw and recorded figures and landscapes in rich colors, he was particularly known for impressionistic depictions in the Flemish technique, creating his own paint using linseed oil, lead carbonate, and mastich varnish on his kitchen stovetop.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Artist Frances Hall Herring (1898-1973) Year 1940s Medium Watercolor on paper 13 1/4”x19 1/4” (image size) Price $595.00 Frances Hall, from Milledgeville, Georgia was like many young female artists who came into their own artistically in the shadow of a more famous artist husband. In this case, it was the well-regarded portrait and landscape painter, Frank Stanley Herring. The couple met at the Grand Central School of Art in New York city where Mr. Herring was teaching in the early 1920s and Ms. Hall was a student. After marrying, the couple visited, and ultimately moved, to south Florida, living in Miami until the 1929 Stock Market crash which forced them back to NYC. Throughout the 1930s, the Herrings continued to travel in the South and both painted landscapes and portraits of local African Americans as well as white patrons. Mrs. Hall was always mentioned as simply the wife of Frank Herring. They painted throughout Florida and on the coast of Georgia and, in 1932, they made their first trip to Little Switzerland, high in the mountains of western North Carolina. They would spend nearly every summer in Little Switzerland until Frank Herring’s death in 1966 running the Ringling Museum School of Art’s summer term art school. With the end of World War II, in the summer of 1945, the Herrings in partnership with artist Edward Shorter, purchased a summer camp property, just north of Little Switzerland, in Burnsville, N.C. called Seecelo. Seecelo was a 52-acre tract of land, at an altitude of 3,000 feet, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains with a large studio, 10 cottages, two lodges, a dining room, a lake and a swimming pool. There, both France Hall and Frank Herring taught classes while Frank keep his contacts and teaching positions at both the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota and the Grand Central School of Art. The Herrings finally retired to Milledgeville, Georgia in 1956. Both artists taught summer Burnsville art classes at Seecelo for twenty years, only stopping in 1965 for health reasons. In the post WWII era, Frances began to exhibit regularly with her husband. Her work is recognized as part of the pantheon of southern women artists active in her native Georgia and Florida and North Carolina.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Artist Franz Josef Bolinger (1903-1986) Year 1950s Medium Oil on canvas 24”x30” (canvas size) Price Upon Request Franz Josef Bolinger painted thousands of pictures of the Everglades. A man obsessed by his love of nature, Mr. Bolinger was best known for his outspoken devotion to and massive collection of paintings on the Everglades. He liked to call himself the last of the old-time Florida artists. "It's so beautiful, so beautiful that I get bitter and bitter at these people who are destroying it", Bolinger said of the Everglades in 1974. "If the Creator was willing, I'd paint 500 pictures a year. I don't care if I sell one of them. That's why I'm painting so furiously from 6 o'clock in the morning to 3 o'clock next morning. I paint every day." In 1960, Mr. Bolinger became dedicated to preserving the Everglades on canvas. "Civilization is working night and day to destroy the great vacant places of the earth," he said then. "I will try and retain in the only place where anything is permanent - man's imagination. Let's have some happy painting for a change. The world is still full of beauty. Of course, it's more difficult to paint a sunset than a board fence or a garbage pail, but just look at the difference. Between 1962 and 1974, Mr. Bolinger almost exclusively painted the Everglades completing more than 1,000 paintings. Mr. Bolinger, born in Ft. Lauderdale, lived in Florida nearly all of his life and was a favorite among many Miamians.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Artist Edward “Eddie” Rosenfeld (1906-1983) Year 1950s Medium Oil on board 16”x20” (board size) Price $695.00 Edward (Eddie) Rosenfeld was born in Baltimore in 1906 and lived in Walbrook. Eddie had two or three brothers and two sisters, but he never married. Eddie’s father had a shoemaker shop on Baltimore Street. Eddie had an early job as sign painter’s apprentice and went to Maryland Institute College of Art for about one semester. During the war, Eddie had a job in Washington, DC framing pictures. Later, Eddie returned to Baltimore and rented and subsequently bought a house on Tyson Street before the house was renovated and the neighborhood was revitalized. He was long known as “The Mayor of Tyson Street” due to the regentrification of Mount Vernon that Rosenfeld was integral in initiating in the 1940s. A group of artists including Carl Metzler, Aaron Sopher, Reuben Kramer, Jacob Glushakow & Eddie would meet regularly there to paint and critique each other’s work. Eddie was also a part of a weekly lunch group with Jim Brady, Donald Proctor, and Dr. Neustadt, who met at the Belvedere Hotel or Rosenfeld’s house. Rosenfeld’s works are owned by many known repositories of art, including the Jewish Museum of Maryland, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Phillips Collection. When Eddie Rosenfeld died in 1983, he donated his body to science and was subsequently buried in Spring Grove Cemetery. This image depicts one of Rosenfeld’s favorite places, the race track at Pimlico Downs. Minor inpainting with new varnish. Comes in the original frame with a restored finish. The work is signed in the lower right corner in pencil and inscribed with the title and artist’s name on the back of the frame. Additional photographs available upon request.</image:caption>

Aimar was an artist from Charleston, South Carolina and based on her business card attached to the back of the painting, she provided “Originals” to the public. Her address is listed and 2 seven digit phone numbers. On the reverse side of the card is information about this work including her name, home address again, the title “Burnsville”, the media and price of $250. Little else is known about her life other than she is buried in the St. Philip’s Episcopal Cemetery in downtown Charleston. Her husband was Harold Anthony Aimar (1908-1994). Given there was an active summer artist school near Burnsville, she might have been taught by members of the staff there including Frank Stanley Herring and John Bryans. This is a well-executed work in the style that combined evolving modernist sensibilities with more traditional landscape composition common in the mid-20th century.</image:caption>

Stevens is known for his paintings and tonal pastels depicting the rural Southern landscape, abstractions of nature, and non-objective works. His paintings are in the collections of over forty museums in the US, including the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Stevens studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy for three years before leaving the Academy to begin working at the Rookwood Pottery as a painter/designer beginning in 1904. While there, Stevens met his wife, Grace Hall, a fellow designer. In 1906, Stevens made the first of many visits to New York. He studied for a while at the Art Students League, but was dissatisfied by the classroom style of William Merritt Chase, and soon dropped out. Stevens was featured in several exhibitions at the New Gallery on 30th Street, which displayed an active interest in the more contemporary art movements under the guidance of its owner, Mary Beacon Ford. At the New Gallery, Stevens met and received the encouragement of Jonas Lie, Van Dearing Perrine, and Albert Pinkham Ryder. Stevens received his first one-man exhibition at the New Gallery in March 1907. In 1921, he was invited to join the faculty of Newcomb College in New Orleans where he remained until his retirement in 1948. As in New York, Stevens quickly became part of a community of painters and writers, through which Stevens maintained an active contact with a wide range of ideas and cultural changes, while still quietly pursuing his own idiosyncratic path.</image:caption>

An American, Roseland was primarily known for paintings centered on poor African-Americans. Roseland was largely self-taught, and never traveled to Europe to study art, as did many of the American artists of his time. However, he did receive instruction from John Bernard Whittaker and later, James Carroll Beckwith. One of his most popular subjects were his paintings of black women fortune tellers who read the palms and tea leaves of white women clients. These paintings were widely reproduced during the early 20th century in the form of postcard sets and large full-colour prints that were distributed as Sunday supplements in newspapers. While known most for his paintings of African Americans, his work encompassed many genres, including seascapes and portraits. He also gained renown for his paintings of laborers in the coastal areas of New England and New York and his many interior paintings. Roseland was born and lived his entire life in Brooklyn. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the Brooklyn Society of Artists; in the latter organization he was a member of the executive board.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Artist Ellen Day Hale (1855-1940) Year 1888 Medium Oil on canvas 16"x22" (canvas size) Price $850 Ellen Day Hale (February 11, 1855 – February 11, 1940)[1] was an American Impressionist painter and printmaker from Boston. She studied art in Paris and during her adult life lived in Paris, London and Boston. She exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy of Arts. Hale wrote the book History of Art: A Study of the Lives of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, and Albrecht Dürer and mentored the next generation of New England female artists, paving the way for widespread acceptance of female artists. Hale's family background provided her with a network of strong female role models. Her great-aunt was Harriet Beecher Stowe, abolitionist and author of the anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin.[3] Educator Catharine Beecher and suffragist Isabella Beecher Hooker were also great-aunts.[4] One of Hale's first cousins was writer and social reformer Charlotte Perkins Gilman, best known for her short story "The Yellow Wallpaper". In 1873, Hale began her formal art education and training in Boston with painter William Rimmer. Although the changing cultural and social landscape of Boston provided many new opportunities for women, female students were still segregated from their male counterparts.[2] Therefore, Hale took private lessons from Rimmer, and his instruction focused primarily on drawing and the analysis of anatomy. A year later, Hale enrolled in William Morris Hunt's school for painting with approximately forty other women artists. Seeking additional training, Hale traveled to Philadelphia in 1878 to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). Hale studied at PAFA for two years, where she first painted from the live female nude.[5] Hale attended the Academy while it was directed by Thomas Eakins, who, like William Rimmer, emphasized the study of human anatomy as the basis for figure painting.[2] After studying in Philadelphia, Hale traveled throughout Europe with Knowlton in 1881.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Artist Mildred “Millie” Lyle Dearing (1906-1995 ) Year 1951 Medium Watercolor on paper 14"x23" (image size) Price $495 Not much is known of Mildred “Millie” Lyle Dearing’s personal life, but her contribution to the arts in Athens is well documented through her involvement with the Athens Art Association, primarily from the late 1950s onward and her work with the Georgia Museum of Art. Dearing was born in North Carolina in 1906 as the daughter of A.L. and Mary Dearing. After the death of her father in 1950, she moved to Athens. Upon her move to Athens, Dearing became the secretary to Alfred Heber Holbrook, the founder of the Georgia Museum of Art on the University of Georgia campus. Newspaper articles describing subsequent renovations show Dearing and Holbrook hanging images together. Dearing also served as secretary of Bill Paul, the next director of the Georgia Museum of Art and a professor at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia. Dearing worked on her own art too. According to the collection, Dearing showed her oil paintings at Athens Art Association art exhibitions from the late 1950s onward. She was an apprentice to Laura Blackshear, the founder of the Athens Art Association. Dearing is also listed among the Johnson Collection’s online list of Southern women artists; some of her pieces are held by that museum. Dearing died in 1995 and is buried in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Her work has been posthumously displayed at Athens Art Association retrospective events, including “A Century of Art” at the Lyndon House in 2019. Work has overall even, consistent toning.</image:caption>

William Leon Stacks (1928-1991) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1928. In 1943 when he was 15 years old, he became the youngest member ever elected to the Rockport Art Association, Rockport, Massachusetts. According to a friend of his, Clyde Williams of Beaufort, South Carolina, after two years of study Stacks was apprenticed to William Lester Stevens (1888-1969) for three years, then to Lloyd Wesley Broome to learn more about color, and then to William J. Potter (1883-1964). Stacks years of study with Stevens are evident in this work and many of his later works informed by the technique, color, and forms.</image:caption>
